Frown Got You Down? Don’t fret, here’s a lowdown on the best treatments to avoid or reverse these lines

  • Anne Reyes

We know frown lines can be super frustrating and intimidating so we’re here to tell you why they show up and how to get rid of them.

Have you ever had that dreaded experience of looking in the mirror and noticing that those lines between your eyebrows and on the sides of your mouth have made their home on your face even though it's relaxed? Have you ever been told to turn that frown upside down even when you’re not even frowning? If your answer to either one of the questions is yes, then you’re probably suffering from frown lines.

As the name suggests, these lines typically show up when you’re turning down the corners of your mouth, but they may actually also show up when you’re smiling. Eventually, through the years of frowning and laughing, these lines take a permanent position on your face. Frown lines are probably the most frustrating of all wrinkles, so we’ll talk about what makes them show up and what you can do at home to get rid of them.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE FROWN LINES?

Frown lines make their appearance on different parts of the face, namely between the eyebrows (which are most commonly known as number 11s) and along the corners of the mouth. They develop over time as we habitually contract the muscles that make us squint, pout, or laugh, forcing the skin to gather and form lines as it loses its elasticity. These lines create the illusion of an unintentional look of anger or frustration.

WHAT MAKES THEM APPEAR?

Like all other wrinkles, these lines are caused by your natural loss of collagen and elastin. They may also be either more or less prominent based on your genes. There are also, however, different external factors that may affect the appearance of frown lines.

Environmental Factors

Everyone knows that the number one culprit that increases your chances of having wrinkles is overexposure to the UV rays of the sun. That’s why it’s so important to double protect by wearing sunscreen and sunglasses. But, other environmental factors may increase these chances even further, such as air pollution and smoking (yes, even secondhand smoke). Not only do these things find their way into your pores damaging your skin, but breathing them in also causes skin aging because it constricts blood vessels, which results in less oxygenated blood being delivered to the facial tissues, and, therefore, a loss of elasticity.

Poor Hygiene

Sometimes it can be impossible to shield our skin from the sun or things that go around in the air, so the number one rule to combat this is to keep proper hygiene. Cleansing your face, putting on moisturizer, and wearing sunblock when outside makes a huge difference on your skin. Your face, just like the rest of your body, should be maintained and regularly washed. It’s definitely a must to invest in effective skincare products if you want your skin to look fresh and radiant.

Mental Health

In this day and age, it’s so easy to get overstressed and depressed. It’s important to remember that our mental health affects us both internally and externally. Poor mental health has been found to suppress the immune system and contribute to heart disease, poor gut health, and insomnia. It also affects our skin’s aging process by drying and damaging skin from the inside out. Moreover, the constant feeling of negativity causes us to frown and pout more often, which increases our frown lines. So, while it’s important to take care of ourselves externally, we must not forget to attend to our mental health as well.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MINIMIZE THEM?

Face Massages

A gentle massage on your face will improve blood circulation to the facial tissues and relax your facial muscles which will help minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Doing this with olive oil and coconut oil will moisturize your skin and may help delay skin aging. Just place a few drops of the oils onto your fingertips and massage your forehead and the sides of your mouth in an upward motion for 10 minutes each. This is most effective when done once or twice a day, so it’s best to add it to your daily skincare routine.

A Spoonful of Flaxseed Oil

No, this is not just another oil that you put on your face. Flaxseed oil is a supplement that can boost your intake of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Not only does it help regulate skin barrier function, thus reducing the fine lines and wrinkles, but it also helps with lowering your cholesterol as well as lowering your chances of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. Add at least 2 teaspoons of this to your diet for 2 weeks to see and feel its effects (Note: it is important not to consume this continuously for a long period of time).

Baking Soda

Many expensive exfoliant products contain baking soda as their main ingredient. It removes dead cells and any impurities that have accumulated in your pores. It also improves cell turnover and blood circulation.

To create this, mix equal parts water and baking soda until it turns into a paste. Scrub this into your face in circular motions for a few minutes and rinse. This may also be applied as a mask by applying it to your face and letting it dry for about 10 minutes before rinsing it off. As with other exfoliants, this may dry out your face so always moisturize afterward. Use this mask or scrub twice a week for best results.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains natural alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), which help loosen dead skin cells so they will naturally slough off more easily. Also, the pH balancing property of apple cider vinegar, will make your skin glow with a youthful appearance.

Just soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and gently rub it on your face, neck, and chest with circular motions after your usual face wash. This may also be used as a face mask by adding a bit of honey and leaving it on your face for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing off. Do this twice a week for glowing skin.

Aspirin

Aspirin doesn’t just have to be used for curing headaches and reducing fever symptoms. It can also be used as a face mask. It’s composed of acetylsalicylic acid, which unclogs and even minimizes the appearance of pores. It also contains exfoliating properties. Regular application produces anti-aging effects on the skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, so try to use this mask twice every week.

Crush up 8 to 10 tablets of Aspirin and mix in water until it becomes a paste. Then apply this to your face and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing off.

Tomatoes

While eating tomatoes is good for your diet, it also works wonders on the skin. Tomatoes are packed with beta-carotene and lycopene which reverse the damage caused by the harmful rays of the sun. A tomato mask reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.

Cut a tomato in half, dip the inner part in sea salt, and gently scrub it on your face for about a minute. After scrubbing, leave the juice on the skin for about 5 minutes and rinse off. Repeat this process two times a week for healthier skin.
